In 2025, the UK Home Office introduced stricter visa compliance rules, reducing the Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA) refusal threshold from 10% to 5%. As a result, many UK universities saw a rise in refusal rates — especially from Pakistan and Bangladesh — forcing them to pause or suspend recruitment to protect their sponsor licences.
Pakistani student refusal rate in 2025: ≈18%
Bangladeshi refusal rate: ≈22%
Because of this, several universities have announced temporary suspensions, paused intakes, or limited admissions for Pakistani applicants for January 2026 & September 2026 intakes.
These are not permanent bans, but temporary measures due to Home Office compliance requirements.

1. Stricter Home Office Rules (BCA 2025)
Universities must keep student-visa refusal rate below 5%, otherwise they risk losing their sponsor licence.
2. Increase in Visa Refusals
Pakistan’s refusal rate in 2025 is around 18%, far above the allowed limit.
3. Increased Monitoring of High-Risk Countries
The Home Office is closely reviewing countries with high asylum-switching rates.
4. Protecting Sponsor Licence
Instead of risking licence suspension, universities prefer pausing recruitment temporarily.
What This Means for Pakistani Students
🔹 This is NOT a ban
Pakistani students are not banned from the UK. Only some universities have paused or restricted admissions.
🔹 Many universities are still open
Dozens of UK universities still accept Pakistani students without restrictions.
🔹 Admissions for 2026–2027 will reopen
